Tigrinya is a Semitic language spoken by the Tigray-Tigrinya people in the Horn of Africa in Ethiopia and Eritrea. In Ethiopia speakers of Tigrinya are called Tegaru, whereas in Eritrea they are called Tigrigna.
Tigrinya should not be confused with another Eritrean language, Tigre.
The Tigrinya language is written with Ge’ez script, previously also called Ethiopic. It is an abugida-style system where each symbol represents both the consonant and vowel sounds of a syllable.
