Romanian
Romanian is a Romance language spoken in Romania and Moldova and is one of the five languages in which religious services are performed in the autonomous monastic state of Mount Athos (Greece). But you probably knew that already. Moldovan only has minor spelling differences when compared to Romanian.
Romanian has preserved more of the Latin grammar than other Romance languages but remains very similar to them; Romanian has 77% lexical similarity to Italian, 75% to French and 71% to Spanish. About 20% of modern Romanian words are of Slavic origin.
The name “Romania” comes from the Latin word “Romanus” which means “citizen of the Roman Empire”.
