Oromo

Oromo is an Afroasiatic language spoken predominantly in Ethiopia.

Until the 1970s Oromo was written with either the Ge’ez script or the Latin alphabet. In the early 1970s the Latin alphabet became the official alphabet for Oromo. Before 1974, the Amharic government, under the leadership of Haile Selassie, suppressed the Oromo people and culture, so little publishing or teaching of Oromo took place.

The Oromo calendar is a lunar calendar, twelve months and 27 days per month, each with its own name. As a result, Oromo speakers rarely use names for the days of the week.
