Lithuanian

Lithuanian is a member of the Baltic branch of Indo-European languages together with Latvian. It is sometimes grouped with Slavic languages under the Balto-Slavic branch.

Lithuanian is most closely related to Latvian, the only other living Baltic language. 85% of Lithuanian’s 3 million inhabitants speak Lithuanian as their first language.

Despite the government’s best efforts to avoid the use of loanwords in Lithuanian, many English words have become accepted and are now included in the Lithuanian language. Dictionaries now include such neologisms as “monitories”, “kompiuteris” and “faksas” etc.
