Kashmiri
Kashmiri is spoken in the states of Jammu and Kashmir in India and since 2008 it has been a compulsory subject in the schools within the Kashmiri Valley. It is one of the 22 Scheduled Languages of India.
As with many languages, religion influences vocabulary in Kashmiri; Muslims borrow words of Persian and Arabic origin whilst Hindus use vocabulary of Sanskrit origin.
Today Kashmiri is written in several different scripts: a modified Perso-Arabic script from right-to-left, Devanagari (where each character is made of consonant and vowel or just a consonant) from left-to-right and also, occasionally, the Latin script. Previously the Sharada script was also used but this is now only used with religious ceremonies.

Raina's "Dictionary of Peculiar and Uncommon Kashmiri Words and Phrases" includes the term "drathû päntsúk" which is defined as: "the period of five lunarasterisms, commencing with the second half of Dhanistha, and the whole of Satabhisaj, Purvabhadrapada, Uttarabhadrapada and Revati, during which it is forbidden to collect earth, wood or grass".
