Hawaiian
Hawaiian is a Polynesian language spoken in Hawai’i where it is an official language alongside English. Other languages in this language group include Tagalog, Māori and Malagasy.
Hawai‘i is the only U.S. state that recognizes an Indigenous language, Hawaiian, as an official state language alongside English. Although it has official status, Hawaiian is still endangered, with very few native speakers but a growing number of second-language speakers due to revitalization efforts. The language has also contributed loanwords to English, such as “aloha,” “hula,” and “ukulele”.
