Danish

Danish is a member of the North Germanic branch of the Indo-European language group. It is a descendant of the Old Norse language of the Germanic people during the Viking era. Without the Vikings, English would be missing some vital words like “berserk”, “ugly”, “muck”, “skull”, “knife”, “die” and most importantly “cake”.

Danish is spoken in Denmark, but it was also the main language of Norway from the 16th to the 19th centuries and used to be an official language of Iceland. Today it is one of the official languages of the Faroe Islands and up until 2009 it was also one of the two official languages of Greenland.

Danish and Norwegian are mutually intelligible.

As a Scandinavian language of literature it has been used since the fifteenth century.
