With approximately 1.4 million speakers covering the northern slopes of the Greater Caucasus Mountains, Chechen has a distinct structure and rich cultural significance.
The Chechen language has been written with several scripts, with Arabic script (right-to-left) in the early 20th century, then Latin from 1925 onwards, followed by the Cyrillic alphabet until 1992. A Chechen Latin script was then introduced, then abolished and Chechens have now reverted back to the Cyrillic script.
