Akan is part of the Niger-Congo language family and spoken by the Akan people, who mostly live in Ghana and along the Ivory Coast. There are three main dialects (Fante, Asante Twi and Akwapim Twi) which are mutually intelligible.

Akan spelling was standardized in 1978.
