HE CHALLENGE

A major international sustainability disclosure framework — supported by partner organisations and governments across six continents — faced an ambitious multilingual publication challenge ahead of COP. A comprehensive 150-page report covering transition finance, nature-positive investment, and biodiversity metrics needed to be translated into six languages simultaneously, with final typeset versions required before the conference opened.

This was not a routine translation. The report represented the definitive reference for policymakers, financial institutions, and NGOs operating under the initiative’s framework. Terminological precision was non-negotiable: a mistranslated definition could propagate across policy documents, investment mandates, and regulatory guidance for years.

WHY GEO

The initiative had worked with Geo on prior projects, and crucially, Geo had accumulated high-quality translation memory and terminology datasets from that work. This meant Geo could begin with validated, consistent foundations rather than starting from scratch — essential on one of the largest environmental translation projects either party had undertaken.

THE GEO APPROACH

Geo designed a hybrid translation architecture built specifically for the scale and precision this project demanded:

– Built bespoke translation engines, each trained exclusively on the initiative’s prior publications and partner content, ensuring stylistic and terminological consistency from the first draft.

– Assembled a team of specialist ESG linguists and subject-matter reviewers for each target language, with expertise spanning green finance, biodiversity science, and multilateral policy.

– Built a dedicated project terminology database cross-referenced against the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), CDP and GRI — ensuring every translated term aligned with the frameworks policymakers and investors already use.

– Ran parallel in-country partner review workflows across all six languages simultaneously, with Geo managing coordination, version control, and resolution of reviewer queries throughout.

– Delivered final typeset-ready files in all languages on schedule for COP publication.

THE RESULT

All six language versions were published on schedule. The report was adopted as a reference document across the initiative’s global network of partner organisations and government stakeholders. The MT engines and terminology database built for this project continue to support the initiative’s ongoing translation needs, significantly reducing cost and turnaround time for subsequent publications.
