Case study: ESIA Translation at Scale

THE CHALLENGE

A leading global environmental consultancy was engaged to deliver Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIAs) for a major infrastructure development in Africa, covering mines, dams, ports, rail corridors, and marine operations. Each ESIA required translation into the relevant national and regional languages — with technical content spanning biodiversity science, geological survey data, infrastructure engineering, health impact assessment, and legal compliance.

The project volume was extraordinary: nearly three million words of highly technical content, across multiple simultaneous workstreams, all terminology aligned to IFC Performance Standards and subject to the scrutiny of national regulators, international lenders, and civil society organisations. Deadlines were fixed by the project development timeline and could not slip.

THE COMPLEXITY

ESIAs of this scale present unique linguistic challenges. Terminology must be consistent not only across languages but across subject domains — a biodiversity term used in the mining ESIA must align precisely with its usage in the marine operations ESIA. Local flora and fauna require verified translations that may not exist in standard references. IFC standards impose specific language requirements that must be traceable through every translated document.

THE GEO APPROACH

Geo assembled a multidisciplinary project team and built the infrastructure required to manage the project at scale:

– Recruited and coordinated a team of specialist translators spanning biodiversity, geology, civil and marine infrastructure, occupational health, and environmental law.

– Established a dedicated terminology team who extracted all domain-specific terms across every ESIA workstream, cross-referenced them against IFC Performance Standards, and researched local flora and fauna nomenclature using regional scientific publications and in-country sources.

– Built a unified master project glossary, shared across all translators and enforced through translation memory tools, ensuring terminological consistency across every document regardless of subject domain or translator.

– Deployed advanced translation technology with project-specific MT models to accelerate throughput, freeing specialist translators to focus on technically demanding content.

– Maintained a rigorous QA process throughout, with independent review of all specialist content before delivery.

 

THE RESULT

Nearly one million words of scientifically precise, IFC-compliant content was delivered in under a month — enabling the consultancy to meet its project development milestones and submit ESIAs to regulators and lenders on schedule. The master glossary produced for the project has been retained as a reference resource for subsequent environmental work in the region.
