Swahili

Swahili, or Kiswahili, is spoken in south-east Africa where it serves as lingua franca. It is estimated that while only 10 million people speak Swahili as their first language, a further 70 million speak it as a second language.

The name Swahili is derived from the Arabic word Sawahil, meaning “coastal dwellers”. The prefix ki- means “language” so Kiswahili means “Swahili language”.
