Sotho (Northern)

Northern Sotho is a Bantu language together with other African languages such as Tswana, Kinyarwanda, Swahili and Lingala.

Northern Sotho (Sesotho sa Leboa) is one of 12 official languages and the 5th most spoken language in South Africa. It is also known by the name of its standardised dialect, Sepedi (or Pedi), as written Northern Sotho was based largely on Sepedi.

The language is not to be confused with Southern Sotho/Sesotho, which is spoken in Lesotho as well as in South Africa.

Interesting fact

Northern Sotho is sometimes incorrectly referred to as Pedi or Sepedi. This is technically incorrect as Pedi is a dialect of Northern Sotho.
