Slovene
Slovene, or Slovenian, is a member of the South Western Slavic language family. Other languages in this language group include Macedonian, Bosnian and Ukrainian to name but a few. It is also an official language of the European Union.
The name ‘Slovene’ in Slovenian (slovenski jezik) means “Slavic language”; similarly, ‘Slovak’ in the Slovak language (slovenský jazyk) means exactly the same. Nevertheless, these two languages should not be confused.
Interestingly, some words have the same written form but are pronounced differently e.g. med (can mean both honey or between) or gol (can mean naked or goal). Many languages only differentiate between singular and plural but Slovene also has a category for “dual”. Out of all Slavic languages, Slovene is the only one to exhibit this feature.
