Marathi is an Indo-Aryan language, which is in turn a member of the Indo-European language group. Other branches of the Indo-European language group include Celtic, Germanic and Balto-Slavic to name but a few.
It is spoken mainly in the state of Maharashtra, India, where it holds official status. Mumbai, the capital state of Maharashtra, is famous for Bollywood movies.
Marathi is one of the top 20 most spoken languages in the world and it borrows heavily from Sanskrit. Some reports claim that the two languages have 50% similarity in terms of vocabulary.
Marathi was previously written with the Modo script, but today is written with the Devanagari script using 36 consonants and 16 vowels (compared to just 21 consonants and 5 vowels in the English alphabet).
