Kongo is also known as Kikongo, Kikoongo and Congo. The prefix ki- means language so Kikongo literally means Kongo language. In West Africa it serves as a lingua franca. There is no set spelling for the language.

Creolised forms of the Kikongo can be found in regions influenced by African emigration in South America and the Caribbean.
