Czech is very close to Slovak. They are in fact mutually intelligible, although mutual intelligibility has declined since the break-up of Czechoslovakia.
There are 25 consonants in Czech. Words consisting entirely of consonants are common: krk (neck); prst (finger); smrk (spruce); smrt (death). Words beginning with up to five consonants also appear: čtvrť (quarter) and čtvrtek (Thursday). The letter “ř” is said to be one of the most difficult letters to pronounce in the world.
